Trek Type: Moderate
Malana, a solitary village situated at a height of 2650 metres (8750 ft), perched on a ledge above Malana Nala is perhaps one of the greatest curiosities of Kullu Valley. Malana remained isolated from the rest of the world for a long time, unaffected by modern civilization, villagers here have their own lifestyle and social structure.
People are strict in following their customs. With a population of around 1500 inhabitants, it is one of the oldest democracies of the world with a well-organized parliamentary system, guided by their devta (deity) Jamlu Rishi – a sage from the Puranas. The residents of Malana speak “Kanashi”, language which does not resemble to any of the dialects spoken in its neighbourhood. The outsiders are considered to be inferior and consequently untouchable. Visitors must to stick to the prescribed paths and should not touch any of the walls, houses or local people.
Chandrakhani literally meaning ‘Lunar Crescent’ offers fascinating picture of the verdant surroundings and the rugged grandeur. Near the pass, numerous clumps of rhododendron and other varieties of flowering shrubs add to the beauty of the highland pastures. You get striking views of giant snow peaks from the top of the pass. The downward trek from Chandrakhani to Malana, through Nagruni and Khiksa Thach situated amidst astounding beauty of Malana valley and Malana glacier, affords unforgettable vistas of mountain scenery.
