Chandratal Lake Trek over Hamta Pass (7 Days)

Trek: Easy to moderate

One of the most spectacular treks in Manali region, this, begins from the lush green kullu valley surrounded by towering snow clad mountains and the trail leads through dense evergreen cool forests of walnut, oak and the occasional alder and the meadows of wild flower over Hamta pass (4270 mts) which offers spectacular panorama of verdant valley on one side and rugged, barren high altitude Lahaul valley on the other.

Lahaul & Spiti region, dominated by massif of peaks over 6 thousands metres, is a paradise for mountain climbers from all over the world. Crystal clear water of Chandratal at 4300 meters is jewel of a lake opposite a magnificent mountain range comprising of Chandrabhaga peak. Best suited for an amateur trekker as the program offers the most while roughing it out the least.

Day 1: Arrival in Manali

Transfer to Hotel. Spend few hours walking around the town to acclimatize yourself to the surroundings. Visit famous Hadimba temple and walk to interesting Old Manali. O/n Hotel.

Day 2. Manali (1950 mts) – Sethan village (2500 mts) drive & Trek to chikka (2830 mts), 4 hours

Early morning departure. Drive of an hour followed by easy climb of about three hours takes you to Chikka, today’s campsite for overnight stay. Uphill drive to the Sethan village offers extensive view of the Kullu valley. Village belongs to the people gypsy community known as a Khampas. Trek begins here, Walk through the forest of Maple, Silver Birch, Fir and Oak, paved by the grass and stone and fields of the wild flowers. Campsite by the rivulet called Alian. O/n Camp.

Day 3. Chikka to Balu ka Ghera (3300 mts), 4 hours

Today’s walk takes you to Balu ka Ghera, just below the Hamta Pass situated on a grassy pasture sloping down from the cliffs. Lovely trail which requires you to cross the rivulet twice. Ideal location to end of the day. O/n Camp.

Day 4. Balu ka Ghera to Shea Gharu (3700 m.) over Hamta pass (4200 m.) 5 to 6 hours

The trail begins to ascend toward the mighty Hamta pass, and soon the distant valley of Lahaul & Spiti comes in to view. Top of the pass offers magnificent views of valleys on either side, along with snowy peaks far and wide. Deo Tibba, Indraasan, Indra Kila are notable peaks in its vicinity. Descend from here onwards to the campsite Shea Gharu which means a very cold place because of its proximity to the glacier. During summers, it serves as halting place for the Shepherds and their flock. O/n Camp.

Day 5. Shea Gahru to Chhatru (3360 m.) and drive to Chandratal (4300 mts), 6 hours

The trail descends along the rivulet through rocks & boulders. The three hours long walk takes you to the bank of Chandra River in the Chandra valley, the beginning of the Lahaul-Spiti region - a stark, dry, forbidding yet amazingly beautiful land. The valley commands excellent views of the surrounding mountains, including the 6420 mts high White Sail massif (Dharamsura). Drive from here onwards to reach Chandrtal Lake in another three hours. Relish the tranquility of majestic Lake surrounded by the snowy mountains. The vast meadow by the lake is today’s campsite. O/n Camp.

Day 6. Drive to Manali over Rohtang Pass (3978 mts), 7 hours

Early morning is the best time to observe stillness of lake water, providing clear mirror image of its surroundings. Enjoy the morning hues at Chandratal and leave for Manali by afternoon. Drive over Rohtang Pass, which demarcates the natural barrier between the harsher high altitude desert of Lahaul-spiti and the dense Deodar forests, apple orchards and pretty alpine meadows of the Kullu valley. Drive through Marhi and green meadows of Gulaba down to famous tourist resort of Manali. Reach Manali by evening. O/n Hotel.

Day 07

Relaxed morning followed by check out. Explore local market and Board the Volvo bus in the evening for Delhi OR Taxi for onward/return journey.
